Frequently Asked Questions

What are decorative pebbles used for in the garden?

Tuscan Path offers two main pebble ranges: Landscaping Pebbles and Decorative Pebbles.

  • Landscaping Pebbles are durable natural stones, ideal for garden beds, walkways, water features and general ground-covering applications.
  • Decorative Pebbles are visually striking options in materials such as glass, marble, quartz and river pebbles, perfect for pot toppers, highlighting feature plants, water features and smaller design projects.

Use landscaping pebbles where you need a robust, long-lasting surface, and decorative pebbles where you want standout colour, sparkle or a refined finishing touch.

Which pebble size should I choose?

Tuscan Path pebbles come in Extra Small (<10mm) through to Extra Large stone sizes (>50mm), from fine decorative grades to bold landscaping pebbles, depending on the product.

As a general guide:

  • Extra Small and Small stones are ideal for pot toppers, table-top bowls, vases and neat edging around smaller features.
  • Medium stones suit paths, general garden mulching and feature bands in combination with pavers.
  • Large and Extra Large stones are great for dry creek beds, around water features and as high-contrast feature zones that you want to see clearly from a distance.

Check each product’s listed stone size range on the product page to match the look and application you are after.

How many bags of pebbles do I need?

Coverage depends on the stone size and bag weight. You can use our Pebble Calculator to calculate how much you need for your project area.

As a guide, allow:

  • Around 35mm depth for smaller pebbles as pot toppers and small feature areas
  • Around 60mm depth for larger pebbles for garden beds and paths

Measure the area (length × width), choose your depth, then add a little extra for settling and top-ups as the pebbles bed in.

Do pebbles help with drainage and weed control?

Yes. Both Tuscan Path Landscaping Pebbles and Decorative Pebbles allow water to pass through while helping to reduce evaporation from the soil surface.

For the best result:

  • Lay landscaping pebbles over a firm, compacted base.
  • For low-maintenance areas, many gardeners add a permeable weed barrier underneath before spreading the pebbles.
  • Around plants, keep pebbles a few centimetres away from stems and trunks to avoid moisture sitting right against the plant collar.

This combination improves drainage, helps limit weed growth and keeps garden areas looking neat.

Will Tuscan Path pebbles change colour over time?

Natural stones in the Tuscan Path range will naturally look lighter when dry and deeper in tone when wet.

You will also find finishes such as natural, polished, high-polished, crushed, waxed and frosted, plus coloured glass pebbles:

Some pebbles may have a light quarry dust on them when first laid - a quick rinse usually reveals their true colour.

Are these pebbles suitable for indoor and outdoor use?

All Tuscan Path pebbles have been made with materials and finishes, making them suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.

Are the these pebbles food safe for outdoor cooking?

Tuscan Path Pebbles pebbles are not recommended in any food preparation such as barbecues or outdoor cooking, as they may have contain paraffin wax or paint on the outer coating.
